What happened
Saronic, the Austin company that builds autonomous, autonomy-capable and manned ships, broke ground on September 30, 2026 on Port Alpha, a shipyard at the Port of Brownsville, Texas. Vice President JD Vance and Governor Greg Abbott joined company leadership at the event. The Austin American-Statesman put the project at $3.2 billion, while Saronic's release and gCaptain cited more than $3 billion in private capital. Saronic selected Brownsville in July. The initial site covers 835 acres, with an option to expand to nearly 4,400 acres.
Saronic said the first phase would have 150,000 gross tons of annual shipbuilding capacity, 1.2 million square feet of enclosed production space and more than 2,500 feet of deepwater quay, built by a JE Dunn and Alberici joint venture. It estimated up to 10,000 direct jobs over the next decade, and gCaptain reported that operations were expected to begin in 2028. The initial phase includes Landing Craft Utility vessels for the U.S. Navy. The Statesman reported local support: $211 million in Cameron County tax abatements over four phases beginning in 2029, about $228 million in school property tax relief through four agreements, and a $10 million pledge from the Greater Brownsville Economic Development Corp.

Why it matters
The project moved from a July site selection to construction. More than $3 billion of planned private investment is a large fixed commitment, with operations not expected until 2028.
The first phase includes Navy Landing Craft Utility vessels. gCaptain says Saronic's landing craft prototype awards, shared with two other yards, carried about $280.5 million combined, and Saronic disclosed a Navy production award for its 180-foot Marauder one day before the groundbreaking.
The Statesman reports county, school-district and development-corporation support, while Saronic's release names no incentive package. Who bears the cost of the build-out is therefore only partly documented.
